In the 1930’s, Ojai was chosen as the location for a movie entitled “Shangri-La”. The nick-name stuck. A tourist destination with many artists and galleries, orange groves, fine restaurants, the Ojai Valley Inn Resort and Spa, the world-famous Ojai Music Festival and Ojai Tennis Tournament, modern Ojai continues to be known for its beauty.
The first known visitors to Ojai were Chumash Indians, whose name for the valley, meaning “bird’s nest”, is said to have sounded reminiscent of the Spanish translation “Ojai”. Under Spanish, then Mexican administration, the Ojai valley was part of the vast San Antonio land grant. Olives were the original crop of the Ojai valley, first brought to the valley by Spanish settlers nearly 500 years ago. At Regalo the ancient and noble olive has returned to the Ojai valley.
